Back in Lincoln, ready to take on the Sooners

So, about that field trip last weekend. I had a good time, but it was more than a little weird to be anywhere but Nebraska for a college football Saturday.
I’ve never been anywhere where there are empty seats, and people are OK with only being at part of the game. And I’ve never been anywhere where I was mocked for checking up on Nebraska (they won, thankfully). This weekend, things are back to normal.
I spent last night in downtown Lincoln, and a number of Oklahoma fans were milling about the bars. A friend and I were in the process of explaining to a friend from another state how we really enjoy being nice to visiting fans, and building Nebraska’s reputation of having the nicest fans in college football.
Just then, an Oklahoma fan came outside and asked if anyone had a cigarette. My friend handed him one immediately, and we wasted no time in chatting the guy up, talking about our teams’ great rivalry. As intense as the Nebraska-Oklahoma rivalry is, it has always been one of respect. We may jest about Sooner fans all being loudmouth drunks, but when you get down to it, we respect them, and they respect us.
When the Sooner fan walked away, our visitor was flummoxed. He said if he had been approached by a fan of his team’s rival, there would have been swearing and arguing, not sharing a smoke and reminiscing about all the great games.
With all that said…I hope we stomp all over Oklahoma tonight (7 p.m. Central time, on ABC).
Go Big Red!
