Baseball wives…
March 25, 2009 at 11:42 pm | Posted in Baseball, Major League Baseball, Media, Minda's Take, Sports Culture | 3 CommentsFor a long time, I thought I wanted to marry a Major Leauge Baseball player. I thought about it frequently, and came up with the notion that I would be a GREAT baseball wife. I can handle egos, whether those egos are healthy or bruised. I know the game of baseball and would know, based on his on-field performance, whether my husband would like to talk about his day at work when he got home in the evenings.
Plus, I could work in some form – I always pictured being some snazzy freelance writer – if I wanted to, but I wouldn’t need to because, you know, MLB players are rich.
That idea seemed awesome, right up until I got a job in professional baseball. (Boss, don’t panic! I’m not gonna say anything bad here!) At that point, I saw that it wouldn’t really be as much fun as I originally thought. Even if I found one of the good guys who didn’t stray into the temptations of life on the road, there’s still just no way to set up any kind of stable life. I have come to admire those few baseball married couples who are strong and stable, because the baseball world does NOT lend itself well to those two qualities.
Also, you know…being a baseball writer and a baseball wife might create an ever-so-slight conflict of interest. Just maybe.
Anyway, my point in all of this is that there’s a baseball wife blog that I just found! Ashley Thompson, whose husband Rich pitches for the Angels, is sassy and honest about her life as a pitcher’s wife. It’s a pretty good read, especially if you’ve ever considered life as a sporstwife.

Yeah, there are times it sounds great. But I don’t know if I could handle the long road trips, the trades, the releases and just everything that goes along with it. It’s a nice dream though. :)
